This famous street is the heart of Key West's nightlife, lined with bars, restaurants, and shops, making it a hub of activity for both locals and tourists.

Our First Fantasy Fest 2019

Each October, Key West hosts Fantasy Fest, a lively and extravagant 10-day street festival filled with masquerade balls, costume contests, and parades.

We attended for the first time back in 2019, and it was both fun and one of the best people-watching experiences we've ever had. People wear everything from intricate homemade designs to store-bought costumes. The event encourages creativity;

attendees often dress in fantastical, humorous, or risqué outfits. Body paint, colorful wigs, and extravagant accessories are also popular choices. The costumes range from playful and whimsical to bold and daring, reflecting the festive and uninhibited atmosphere of Fantasy Fest. Be prepared to see a lot of skin!

11. Dry Tortugas National Park:

Just 70 miles west of Key West, this remote national park is home to Fort Jefferson, incredible marine life, and pristine beaches, accessible by boat or seaplane. Visitors can explore the fort, snorkel in the clear waters, birdwatch on the islands, and simply relax on the picturesque beaches. The park is accessible by boat or seaplane, and many visitors opt for a day trip or camping excursion to fully experience the natural wonders and historical significance of this unique destination.

12. Key West's Free-roaming Chickens:

It's common to encounter a flock of colorful, free-roaming chickens throughout the island, a quirky and endearing feature of Key West's local wildlife. When early settlers arrived, they brought chickens for a steady supply of eggs and meat. Over time, some chickens escaped or were released, and because Key West has a warm climate with abundant food and shelter, the chicken population flourished.
